Biographical Sketch
Andrea Vogt is an Italy-based author and freelancer whose journalism career spans both the U.S. and Europe, where she has published in English, German and Italian.
She was born and raised near a small North Idaho logging town in the Pacific Northwest. She earned her first dollar documenting load weights in the scale shack of the local lumber mill the summer she turned 16.
After completing degrees in political science and German, she covered crime, education and breaking news for nearly a decade as a newspaper reporter in the Rocky Mountain West, earning journalism honors from the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists while at the Lewiston Morning Tribune in Idaho and the Spokesman-Review, a metro daily in Washington State.
As a Fulbright Scholar and recipient of several other international fellowships, she went on to publish in several German publications, including the Munchner Merkur and the national news weekly Der Spiegel in Hamburg. She began freelancing full-time in 2001 and her work has appeared in various print, broadcast and new media, including The Independent, Italy's leading weekly news magazine Panorama, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Seattlepi.com, The Daily Beast, Sky News, National Geographic Traveler, and Review of Policy Research, among others.
Her first non-fiction book, Common Courage: Bill Wassmuth, Human Rights and Small Town Activism, was published by the University of Idaho Press in October 2003, and is in its second printing. Bologna Inside, the expatriate's guide to living in Italy she co-authored and edited in 2006, is available in both traditional and e-book format.
She worked for three years for the Equal Opportunity Commission at Italy’s largest and oldest academic institution, the University of Bologna, and continues to lecture on gender, media and Italian culture for private and public sector agencies and American universities. She migrates with her husband and two children between central Italy and the Pacific Northwest each year.
